IC Information
CHARACTER NAME: Mike Wazowski
AGE: 7
CANON: Monsters University
CANON POINT: A few months after his first field trip to Monsters Inc.
FAMILY TYPES: Jungle Troopers: Mike’s currently struggling to become a respected monster instead of just a cute little kid, not to mention wanting to become scary when he is very clearly not. Plus he is a cheerful and upbeat child and will more than willing to climb a mountain just to obtain a goal.
Dragon’s Roar: Mike is a natural leader, and is definitely not against doing stupid things to prove a point.
Nightmare Soldiers: Mike, as most monsters are, is a fan of trickery and deception. He doesn’t do it often and rarely if ever to intentionally harm someone, but if it gets the job done, he won’t hesitate to do it.
APPEARANCE: Normally Mike is a tiny monster with a green, round body that’s pretty much 100% head. He has one giant green eye and tiny horns on the top of his head. Interestingly he also has light freckles on his face.
As a human he is a shorter than average child, just around three feet, and slightly chubby. Hair is short dirty blond, but just long enough that it’s noticeable how much of a curly mess it is. He’ll still have some of some of his monstrous appearance: Sharper than normal teeth and fingernails, being cycloptic, and horns (although you can’t see them through his hair) are the those. He’s fine with just wearing a T shirt and shorts but is always wearing a too-large-for-him baseball cap with the initials “MU” written on it.
PERSONALITY:Mike is not a very fearful being. He finds things that what a human would find creepy or even frightening the norm or even cool. This is pretty normal for most monsters. However even in the world he’s in, he’s especially fearless. In the movie, he sneaks into the human world because one of the kids said that he didn’t belong on the scare floor. This is the equivalent of someone willingly going to a mine field for a human.
Despite that, he is a pretty friendly and optimistic monster. Despite being outcasted by his classmates, he tries to befriend them. The worst case scenario won’t even enter his mind when he’s thinking about things. His mind just goes “This is going to be great. I am going to be awesome”. On the other hand, his optimism and confidence is so extreme that it goes into self-endangerment sometimes. It’s especially evident when he charges into the human world after a classmate says he doesn’t belong on the scare floor without even thinking. It does show how brave he is, but it also shows that he never stops to think that what he’s doing is a bad idea.
When Mike wants something, he stops at nothing to try and achieve it. He will work harder than anyone, However if he doesn't want to do something, he is not against trying to ignore it. It’s not a complete opposite extreme, but he is much less willing to do something if he doesn’t enjoy it and/or the end prize doesn’t appeal to him.
Of course when he first enters Terminal Tokyo he will be having a panic attack, and to be fair most monsters from his world will have the same reaction. After all, if a human woke up one day to find them turned into something that kills everyone with just a touch, most would be freaking out too. And even when he finds out that the digimon are unharmed by his touch and that he won’t die if a human child touches him, he will be more comfortable talking to people’s digimon rather than the people themselves.
It’s never outright explained in canon why specifically he wants to become a scarer. Still it’s not complicated once thought about. It’s pretty obvious from the start that everyone saw him as the weak, tiny guy who can’t take care of himself. When Frank McCay was amazed about Mike’s ability to hide while in the human world, he showed him respect, and for probably for the first time in his life someone took him seriously. That was the turning point from enjoying the attention, to realizing that if he was a scarer, monsters would not only not treat him like a child, but actually respect him. And while he wasn’t immediately “I wanna be that”, because Frank was the first person to truly respect him, he perceived scaring as the best job there is.
Probably his greatest weakness is how stubborn he is. As stated before, if he wants something he’ll try his hardest to get it. And if he believes something, it will take nothing short of a miracle to change his mind. This is especially true about how human children are toxic. As a human he might make friends with all the children here, something that he didn’t have in his home world, and at best he might make sure that he doesn’t scare their children when he grows up.
While never stated in his canon point, he can be rather obsessive in the things he likes and wants. In the movie he mentions that he has over 4,000 scarer cards in mint condition. While it would be ridiculous to claim that he has even that much at his age, it certainly implies that he was pretty obsessive at a young age. Also in the opening credits, it shows that very soon after deciding he wants to learn how to be a scarer, it almost starts taking over his life. He makes his own card of himself and starts referring to himself as “scary”, for example. While also not stated in canon, he does not take it well when his plans don’t go the way he wants. When Mike has a plan, he plans on sticking to it no matter what, and if any change in the plan he tries his best to get things back on how it originally was. This is especially evident throughout the entirety of Monsters Inc. where Mike keeps trying to convince Sulley to just get Boo back to her door and pretend like nothing ever happened, lest they screw up their chances to break the scare record. This takes place 20 years in the future, but one can see hints of the personality trait.
HISTORY: Pixar Wikia and Wikipedia (As a note for both links the canon point for when I’m taking him is just after the first paragraphs in both links and there are MAJOR SPOILERS in both)
SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON: Here and here although I can get more on request!
THIRD PERSON: Mike didn’t normally lock his bedroom door, but this was important. He didn’t want to risk anyone breaking into his room; he wanted no distractions while he read. He just got back from the library with a stack of books that was larger than him. The books were a bit too advanced for his age, but he read all the books on scaring in the children’s section already. Besides he also checked out a pocket dictionary in case he ran into any words he didn’t understand.
Normally he wouldn’t even check out this many books, but it was summer and he didn’t want to get behind on his studies. He wanted, no, needed to be the best there was if he wanted to get good grades and go to Monsters U, and eventually Monsters Inc. to be a scarer.
He grabbed the book Common Phobias of Modern Human Children from the pile and quickly dove into it, jotting down every once in a while the phobias he didn’t recognize and their definitions. Mike read it before and for a moment wonder if he should read one of the newer books, but figured that despite how important it is to know the history of scary, should probably memorize the different types of phobias first.
Mike was in the middle of Most Famous Scarers in History When he was interrupted by a loud boom outside. He jumped a little before realizing it was just thundering outside. Geez, how long has it been raining? It was hardly cloudy the last time he looked outside. He looked at the clock on his wall.
“Two hours?” he said in surprise. It really didn’t feel that long, but he wasn’t that upset. After all, he was using his time wisely!
Just then he heard another roll of thunder. Astraphobia… he flipped through his book until he reached “Fear of thunder and lightning”. He gave a fist pump. Yes, got that right!
“Michael, dinner’s going to be ready in ten minutes” called his mother from downstairs.
“I’ll be there in a moment, mom’!” Mike responded. Ten minutes, that should be more than enough time to finish this chapter.
